The book is referred to by Mormons as “another testament of Jesus Christ” and its teachings are vital to Latter-day Saints members. It is believed that Joseph Smith was visited by God and given instructions to create our church’s foundation. In the Book of Mormon, it tells the story of how God visited people in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and death.

One of the main reasons Latter-day Saints are often relegated to the category of cult of non-Christian is because we believe in scripture beyond the Bible. To be sure, we love the Bible. We cherish its sacred teachings and delight in reading and teaching it. We seek to conform our lives to its marvelous precepts. But we do not believe that the Bible contains all that God has spoken or will yet speak in the future.

Occasionally we hear certain Latter-day Saint teachings — like some of those concerning the Savior that I have detailed earlier — described as “unbiblical” or of a particular doctrine being “contradictory” to the Bible. Let’s be clear on this matter. The Bible is one of the books within our standard works, our scriptural canon, and thus our doctrines and practices are in harmony with the Bible. There are times, of course, when latter-day revelation provides clarification of additional information to the Bible. But addition to the canon is hardly the same as rejection of the canon. Supplementation is not the same as contradiction. All of the prophets, including the Savior Himself, brought new light and knowledge to the world; in many cases, new scripture came as a result of their ministry. That new scripture did not invalidate what went before nor did it close the door on subsequent revelation.

As to whether we worship a “different Jesus,” we say again: We accept and endorse the testimony of the New Testament writers. Jesus is the promised Messiah, the resurrection and the life (John 11:25), literally the light of the world (John 8:12). Everything that testifies of His divine birth, His goodness, His transforming power and His godhood, we embrace enthusiastically. But we also rejoice in the additional knowledge latter-day prophets have provided about our Lord and Savior. President Brigham Young thus declared that

we, the Latter-day Saints, take the liberty of believing more than our Christian brethren: we not only believe … the Bible, but … the whole of the plan of salvation that Jesus has given to us. Do we differ from others who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? No, only in believing more.[x]

It is the “more” that makes many in the Christian world very nervous and usually suspicious of us. But it is the “more” that allows us to make a significant contribution in the religious world. Elder Boyd K. Packer observed: “We do not claim that others have no truth. … Converts to the Church may bring with them all the truth they possess and have it added upon.”

He then visited Joseph Smith in order to bring his teachings back to the people in America. By reading this book, members gain a better understanding of their friend and firm testimony in Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon also teaches us about one God who loves us deeply and desires for us to return to him.

It is written from the perspective of prophets and their testimonies of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon is a companion that supports the Bible, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is canonized narrative that echoes the narrative style found in revelations, covenants, and Beatitudes. Joseph Smith was able to bring forth this volume through his testimony and revelations from God. This book is often seen as a second witness to Jesus Christ’s ministry on earth and it’s members are often called Latter-day Saints or LDS churchs. The Church of Jesus Christ has become a person church for many who turn to it for guidance in their lives. It brings comfort and hope to those who are searching for answers and it helps us to understand our purpose in life through its doctrine and teachings which revolve around Jesus Christ as our savior. By living up to the standards set out by the LDS churchs we become closer to our God, fulfilling his commandments for us as His children.

The Book of Mormon is a companion that supports the Bible, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. God showed Enoch the vision of what would become the Latter Day Saint movement. One such prophet was Joseph Smith, who was called as a prophet, seer and translator for God’s true church. Along with many other early adherents, Joseph Smith grew in stature and was commanded to translate golden plates which contained inspired passages. He also received other revelations that were incorporated into what is now known as The Doctrine and Covenants. The Book of Mormon is seen as an extension to the Bible and provides evidence that Christs true church still exists today. It includes inspiring passages from ancient prophets and contains spiritual truths that can help us in our day-to-day lives. Through reading this book we learn about Jesus’s teachings and His gospel plan for mankind; it also serves as a witness to us about God’s true power and love for us all.

The Bible is the word of God

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like many people around the world, find comfort and inspiration in the Bible. We cherish its teachings.

In the Bible, the Apostle Paul taught, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1).
